What is Cogat?

Cogat stands for Cognitive Abilities Test. This test is conducted to check reasoning skills. It isn’t like some math or spelling test where if individuals know facts or words, they are able to achieve 100 percent marks. Furthermore, for Cognitive Abilities Test, no curriculum is defined. This test is a norm-referenced test wherein the national average accepted is fiftieth percentile. Levels of Cogat Test

Every level of Cognitive Abilities Test will offer test batteries in mainly 3 above mentioned categories. Students can administer this test in part or as a whole; however student’s absolute complete view shall be provided via administration of all 3 batteries. Verbal, Non-Verbal, and Quantitative Cogat Test are-:

  • Verbal battery- this test is conducted for assessing vocabulary of the student in addition to their comprehension of efficiency, ideas, verbal memory as well as their ability at discovering word relationships. There are 3 sub-tests of this section of the Cogat that are conducted in this section and every test will have nearly twenty questions. They are then asked to select one word from five words which in turn can look alike. The second sub-test is sentence completion wherein the student is provided a sentence with some word missing. The third sub-section is verbal analogies wherein the students are provided with 3 words that will be in dark type. First 2 words will go together but the 3rd one will go with one of the choices provided. Students are asked to select from among those choices a word that perfectly goes with 3rd one just the manner in which 2nd word goes with 1st word.
  • Quantitative Battery- this is a section of Cogat for quantitative reasoning as well as problem solving capabilities of the student and offers appraisal of student’s genera; abstract reasoning level. Here also 3 tests need to be administered. First sub-test will have 25 questions and students will be provided with eight minutes for finishing the test. Second sub-test includes twenty questions having 10 minutes as testing time. The 3rd sub-test has 15 questions and 12 minute as testing time. The 1st sub-test is quantitative relations where students are given 2 problems numbered 1 and 2 having 2 answer options. The students are asked to solve these 2 problems as well as determine if answer is equal to, less than, or greater than. The 2nd sub-test of this section of Cogat is a number series wherein students are provided with series of numbers. They have to decide the number that will come next in series. The 3rd sub-test is equation building. Here, students are provided with signs and numbers and they have to combine those signs and numbers for getting solution that will be answer choice.
  • Non-verbal battery- nonverbal battery aims at presenting novel problems to the students. In Cogat, items used include geometric figures and shapes that will have some direct relationship to the formal school instructions. In this test no reading is required. This test is mainly suited for getting accurate estimates regarding a student’s development especially those who are facing a tough time with reading and have limited knowledge in English as well as limited opportunities. In this test there are three sub-tests having 15 to 25 questions and each sub-test is given 10 minutes. The first sub-test of this section of Cogat is Figure Classification wherein students are provided with 3 figures that look alike in some manner. Three choices for the answer are also given and 5 images to select from. The students are asked to finalize the figure that will best match with the 3 options. The second sub-test is a Figure Analogies where students are provided 3 figures. First 2 figures will go together and for the third figure they need to search the right answer. Figure analysis is the 3rd sub-test wherein students are shown how one square piece of the dark paper can be folded as well as where the holes will be punched. Students are required to figure out the way that hole punched paper will appear when it’s unfolded.

As per standard age scores, a very high score in Cogat is between 128 and 150, above average score is between 112 and 127, average score is between 89 and 111, below average score is between 73 and 88, and very low score is between 50 and 72.
