Cognitive Ability

The main abilities that most Cogat aims at testing are the functions of execution, attention and memory. Each of these functions can be broken down further, so as to deeply assess any specific function. For example, the brain has the capability of storing memories in 2 forms, namely short term and long term memory. One of the most celebrated cognition tests will check both the memories separately. Both of these memories will be tested on a separate basis in cognitive testing. As the complete process of evaluation of a person’s Cognitive Ability would involve a series of tests, each testing has different function and sub-function, the entire process spans over a period of almost 2 and a half days, with around 2 to 3 evaluations taking place each day.

Use Cogat Test to get cure from Cognitive Decline!

Cognitive decline is associated with functional impairment and is a risk factor for frank dementia. Enough effort has therefore been applied in identifying its causes. While social behavior factors have been tested, much less is known about the lifelong influence of Cognitive Ability. Lower ability in childhood and early adulthood is associated with increased risk of dementia, but the influence of early ability on general cognitive decline is less understood. A recent study found no difference in rate of cognitive change throughout life according to estimated level of early ability.

Using data from the British birth cohort we made a survey on the association between measured Cognitive Ability in childhood and rate of decline in memory, and concentration in mid-life, controlling for educational and occupational attainment. Because cohort members had been administered the national adult reading test (NART) at the age of 54 years we were also able to investigate possible independent effects of Cognitive Abilities in childhood and adulthood on rate of decline in these measures.

More details about Cogat Test:

The Cogat Test is one of the most trusted and pioneering process to test a person’s Cognitive Abilities. It consists of 3 areas, which are the quantitative section, the verbal section and non-verbal section. These sections are described in detail below:

1) Quantitative Section- As the name defines this section basically deals with numbers and a person’s mathematical skills. In this section, the test taker is supposed to solve problems using various mathematical operations and techniques. This section comprises of 3 sections. The 3 sub-sections in the Cogat test are quantitative relations, number series and the last one is that of equation building. These sub-sections are designed to measure the quantitative function of the test taker from various angles.

2) Verbal Section- In order to reply on this section, a person needs to perform strong reading comprehension, critical writing and reasoning skills. Like the quantitative section of the Cogat Test, this section also has 3 sub-sections, namely, verbal analogies, verbal classification and sentence completion. All these sections are designed to shed light on the verbal thinking ability of the test taker through various angles.

3) Non-Verbal Section- The last section of the Cogat test is that of the non-verbal reasoning section. This section deals with measuring the comprehension and reasoning abilities of an individual, while using geometric figures and shapes. As was the case with the other two sections of the Cogat Test, this section is also divided into 3 sub-sections such as Figure Classification, Figure Analogies and Figure Analysis.

Cognitive Abilities

CogAT verifies the cognitive functions of a person. Cognitive Abilities measures reasoning ability in childhood by AH4 and test of verbal comprehension at age 14 years. Cognitive Abilities in adulthood measured by the national adult reading test (NART) at age 54 years! Outcome measures were decline in memory in learning words and speed and concentration from age 44 to 54 years. The Interpretive Guide for Teachers and Counselors focuses on the use of Cognitive Abilities Test results to help improve student achievement. It contains samples of individual and group score reports, along with suggestions for reporting results to parents. The Interpretive Guide for School Administrators discusses the interpretation of Cogat Scores reports and provides suggestions for using test results in curriculum planning and reporting to school officials and the community.

Cognitive Abilities

If you are taking care of your child since childhood with proper Cognitive Abilities test than it will help child in future. Good Ability in childhood could prevent cognitive decline in mid period of life and beyond. Cogat Test results for the adult reading indicate that the protective effect of ability may also be acquired for seniors.

Working procedures of efficient online sites

GATEFORKIDS Online sites are comprised of 4 main parts to help the student prepared the exam.

(1) Lessons: We have overall 12 lessons which cover all kind of test components and Cogat Sample Questions. We also provide a traditional textbook; our audio product provides a vocal function with clear pronunciation for younger students so the parents don’t need to spend too much time on reading out to their kids.

(2) Practice Questions and Test Simulations: We have a Cogat Sample Test bank including over 600 questions, with new questions added every day. Clear answer help and detailed explanations provided after each question allow students to learn from their mistakes. A unique Cogat Composite Score tracking system ensures that the children learn every section thoroughly. Unlike with traditional paper used for exams, students can repeat questions for practice. What’s more, we will also inform the scores of your child via email to you so that you keep a look how you kids are doing on their studies.

(3) Awards. We believe that students need proper guidelines and award to progress, so we provide certificates after finishing of each Cogat Practice Test, sports facilities for relaxation and success scores (AS) for students to collect after passing practice questions.

(4) Study Report: With the help of traditional textbook, it is difficult for the parents to know about performance of their kids in their studies. With our audio recording product, we will record the lessons your child did, the Cognitive Abilities Test Scores he/she earns, and the time he/she spent to complete the exam or practice questions. This tracking will provide both parents and students feedback about their strengths and weaknesses.

Virtually all psychologists now believe that there is a generalized intelligence factor, g, that relates to abstract thinking and that includes the abilities to acquire knowledge, to reason abstractly, to adapt to novel situations, and to benefit from instruction and experience People with higher general intelligence learn faster.

Cogat Test

The Cognitive Abilities Test is administered to students in grades 3 and 5 in mid-September. Reasoning abilities have substantial correlations with learning and problem solving, both in and out of school. Cogat’s measurement of 3 different content domains ensures that educators receive a balanced view of the child. Each level of Cogat offers 3 test batteries: Verbal battery, Quantitative battery and Nonverbal battery. Verbal Battery has further 3 sub-tests such as Verbal Classification, Sentence Completion and Verbal Analogies. Quantitative Battery has further 3 sub-tests such as Quantitative Relations, Number Series and Equation Building. Nonverbal Battery has further 3 sub-tests such as Figure Classification, Figure Analogies and Figure Analysis.

Following 3 types of percentile scores are reported from the Cogat Test:

  • Age Percentile Rank (APR) indicates the percentage of the students in the same age group whose scores fell below the score obtained by a particular student.
  • Grade Percentile Rank (GPR) indicates the percentage of the students in the same grade whose scores fell below the score obtained by a particular student.
  • Local Percentile Rank (LPR) indicates the percentage of the students in the local group whose scores fell below the score obtained by a particular student.

Once Parents will receive their child’s snapshot Profile, they can use the interactive tool provided by website to receive a more details of the student’s strength profile. Teachers use Cogat Composite Score to help students learn more effectively. For example, if a student’s score profile shows an uneven pattern of relative strength and weakness, the teacher can provide challenging opportunities for the student to do the kind of thinking he/she does best. The teacher also supports aspects of new tasks that rely on a student’s relative strength. When the student has established a foothold in an area, the teacher can guide him/her to develop the relatively weaker reasoning skill by applying this skill to the familiar task in order to make strengthening the student’s weakness.

How will be these Cogat scores used?

The Cogat Test is generally used for detection for gifted services; however, the information from your child’s Cogat can be helpful to both teachers and parents. For gifted identification, the Cogat Test represents only one assessment in the body of evidence through area of intellectual aptitude/ability. When you receive your child’s Cogat scores, you can have a “profile.”  Then browse online websites and input the profile in the “interactive profile system” to get more information about your child’s learning process and strength.

How often will student attend this Cogat Test?

The Cogat is only conducted once, as a screener, in 2nd grade students. If a student enters school after 2nd grade and has one indicator for gifted recognition, then the Cogat is administered. Example: For more information about gifted recognition: You can also visit the School Gifted and Talented Website for more information about gifted recognition in school. The Cogat is not a tool for measuring a student’s intelligence or IQ. Rather, it measures the reason solving skills that have developed during a student’s educational career, even though they have not been explicitly taught. These general Cognitive Ability skills are not specific to any content area, but are skills that are used in all areas of a student’s academic experiences.

Cogat Test Scores

The CogAT is comprised of total 120 questions and used in various states of USA. During practice test you can solve variety types of question that might appear on the CogAT final exam. Because more than one answer may appear correct, children must exercise their reasoning capabilities and problem to select the correct answer. This CogAT format may be different from the formats of questions your child answers in school. The CogAT assesses reasoning and problem solving, thinking abilities in 3 areas such as verbal, non-verbal and quantitative and contains also some subtests. Because most of the questions on the CogAT exam are ones that your child must not have seen before in school, most children will not be ready without special preparation for the exam otherwise Cogat Test Scores will be poor.

Standard Cogat Test

There are mainly 3 versions of the CogAT are in use such as Form 5, 6 and 7. Most schools upgraded a number of years ago from Form 5 to Form 6. In July 2011, Riverside Publishing has released a new version of the CogAT Form 7. The CogAT Form 7 exams have replaced some of the test areas on the Form 6 exam. Overall changes to the CogAT exam are intended to make the exam fairer to English Language Learner students. One big change between the CogAT form 6 and 7 is the identification of levels. In Form 6, children attend either the Primary (K, 1 or 2) or the Multi-Level (3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 or 12). In Form 7, levels have been decided to correspond to the most likely age of the child taking the test.

In addition, there are also both spring and fall versions of the Cogat test are implemented. The fall version of the test is a little more difficult because children attended Cogat test later in the school year are expected to be able to face more difficult questions than those tested earlier in the school year. So that the students master all skills in CogAT exams and they can do practice Cogat test on some websites and Cogat Test Scores will be much better. Cogat materials are not only basically developed from the new Form 7 and Fall versions but also include relevant contents of the Form 6 and Spring versions.

All those above tests are almost similar.  I have to say, though, that I am not a trained tester, so my knowledge of these tests is limited.  The CCAT or Canadian Cognitive Abilities Test is another group tests that are made to measure a child’s academic or study abilities.  In other words, its goal is to determine whether a child will likely succeed in school. Their definition of gifted and talented capabilities test may not be the same as ours. Schools use those tests to find the children who will be beneficial from participation in their gifted program.  They are looking for kids who will be able to success in academic performances, so those Cogat Test Scores are quite useful to them.

Cogat Test Prep

CogAT can be conducted in whole or in part, however, the most complete view of a student will be provided through administration of all 3 batteries. For the Primary Edition (Levels K-2), 2 subtests measure each reasoning abilities. The Multilevel Edition (Levels A-H) uses 3subtests to measure each reason solving abilities. A variety item format on every subtest it used to ensure that scores for each battery are not wrongly affected by performance on a particular item type. Some private agencies also conduct Cogat Test Prep at a discounted offer and with lot of additional facilities.

Requirement of Cogat Test Prep

The test levels can be differed as per various levels such as low, average and high ability classes. Some students in any group who are expected to score above the 90% may be selected as candidates for individualized testing with a level different from the level used for the majority of students. In such a case, make inquiry with your school administration for additional information on which level is suitable for your student.

CogAT measures students’ learned reason solving abilities in the 3 areas most linked to academic success in school: Verbal, Quantitative and Nonverbal.

The Verbal Battery tests a student’s vocabulary, as well as his/her comprehension of ideas and verbal memory, and ability to discover word relationships. It is made up of three sub batteries such as Verbal Classification, Sentence Completion and Verbal Analogies. In Verbal classification, the student is given a list of 3 words that are alike in some way. The student is instructed to choose a word, from a selection of 5 words, which is very closely confusing. In Verbal Analogies, selection of matching answer will be required.

The Quantitative Battery tests the student’s quantitative reasoning and problem solving ability. It is made up of 3 sub batteries such as Quantitative Relations, Number Series and Equation Building. In Quantitative relations, the student will face two problems numbered one and two with 3 answer options. The student is to solve the two problems and determine if the answer is greater, less than, or equal to. In Number Series, the student is given a series of numbers and is instructed to decide which number should come next in the series. In Equation Building, the student is given numbers and signs. The student is instructed to combine the numbers and signs to get a solution that is an answer choice. These are related to pure mathematical practice.

In Nonverbal battery the students have to face geometrical questions. The tests need no reading. The nonverbal battery is especially designed for measurement of expertise in reading English rapidly or limited opportunities. This Cogat Test Prep practice makes them stronger. Non verbal battery is made up of three sub batteries such as Figure classification, Figure analogies and Figure analysis. Most of all questions are related to Geometrical figures and variety shapes. Now a day there are some Cogat related websites who provide free or premium membership for attending Cogat Test Prep session.
