What are CogAT Profiles?

After the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) is held, the student or the child is provided with scores as well as a profile. These scores and the profile are then analyzed and interpreted to understand the position, standing as well as development of the child or the student appearing for the exam. The profile that is provided to the student has two boxes. Each box compares the performance of the child in one way or the other. The first box helps to compare the child’s performance with other children who are of the same age and the second box helps to compare the performance of the child with respect to the children of the same grade but nationwide. Only in a situation where the child is younger or is older than the age correct for the specified grade will the age percentile or the stanine will differ from that of grade percentile or grade stanine.

The CogAT profile that is provided to the students helps to determine the strengths and the weaknesses of the students. This profile is usually a letter ranging from alphabet ‘A’ to alphabet ‘E’. The ‘A’ profile shows or represents that the student has performed similar in all the three segments of the test namely, verbal, non-verbal and quantitative. If the student gets a profile ‘B’, it means that the student either has a strength or a weakness among the three segments of tests appeared for. If the student scores the profile ‘C’, it means that the student has both, strength as well as weakness among the three segments. Last but not the least, if the student is given profile ‘E’, it means the same as profile ‘B’ or profile ‘C’ with a difference that the strength and the weakness that the student has is at more extreme than profile ‘B’ and profile ‘C’.

Let us see an example. IF the student’s score in the CogAT exam is 7C(V+Q-), how will be interpret the same. It means that the student has scored a stanine of 7, i.e he or she has performed averagely. The profile he has been given is ‘C’ hich means the student has one strength and one weakness among the three sets of exam. The strength of the student is Verbal segment denoted by ‘V+’ and the weakness of the student is the quantitative set, denoted by ‘Q-‘. Once the strength and the weakness of the student is known, it is easy to work on the weak areas of the student to develop and improve the same.

CogAT Form 6

Till date there are 7 editions or versions of CogAt tests that has come out. It is always the latest version that is used for the exams by the various schools. However, there is always a transition period in between. Therefore, there are still some schools that use Form 6 i.e. the sixth version or the sixth edition for testing the abilities of the students. There are specified sets of booklets for each level or version. These sets of booklets are purchased by the schools organizing the said exam and are reused by them on every year. Therefore, because of the heavy monetary outflow required, updating the new version or edition becomes difficult for the schools. There are different levels of CogAT that can be given depending on the age or the grade of the student who is being tested. The different test levels that can be opted for a student in Form 6 while appearing for the test is Primary K, 1 or 2 or multi-levels 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 or 12. Form 6 was the first edition when the different levels of the exam were identified.

The CogAT Form 6 tests a student on three cognitive areas. These areas are verbal battery, non-verbal battery and quantitative battery. Each of these three sections has three sub sets. All these sub sets are not only timed separately but are also broken into 9 separate and different components to judge and analyze the student in the best possible manner. The student who wants to appear for the CogAT exam has to fill the required form. There are various sections in the said form which are explained below.

While filling CogAT Form 6, the first section is related to the payment information, i.e the details of the method through which the payment of the fee for the exam is being made. Then the form requires the full detail of the purchaser of the form. These details include name, position, address, phone number, email address etc. The next section of the form require the individual to select the booklets or the test books on the basis of the level of test they want to appear for The details about the booklets and the price of the booklets are specifically mentioned in the section. The person filling the form is just required to fill the quantity near the code number of the book and the total price for the said books. There are booklets that provide sample testing as well as the answer sheets for them. There are also options of purchasing the scoring and reporting materials, scoring mask, combines answer folders, reusable text books etc. Many schools purchase the full set of the books and use the same to organize the said CogAT exams at their premises. CogAT Practice Test 3rd Grade

Let us see in detail the format of CogAT test for 3rd grade. The said test is taken on the basis of 3 different sets or types of questions. The first set of questions is the verbal test, the second set is the quantitative questions and the third set is the non-verbal questions. This 3rd grade test is also known as a transition from picture based and teacher paced verbal test as well as quantitative tests which were used for students of grades kindergarten to grade 2 to the text based and numeric based as well as timed verbal and quantitative tests.
