The main abilities that most Cogat aims at testing are the functions of execution, attention and memory. Each of these functions can be broken down further, so as to deeply assess any specific function. For example, the brain has the capability of storing memories in 2 forms, namely short term and long term memory. One of the most celebrated cognition tests will check both the memories separately. Cogat Test

The Cognitive Abilities Test is administered to students in grades 3 and 5 in mid-September. Reasoning abilities have substantial correlations with learning and problem solving, both in and out of school. Each level of Cogat offers 3 test batteries: Verbal battery, Quantitative battery and Nonverbal battery. How often will student attend this Cogat Test?

The Cogat is only conducted once, as a screener, in 2nd grade students. If a student enters school after 2nd grade and has one indicator for gifted recognition, then the Cogat is administered. The Cogat is not a tool for measuring a student’s intelligence or IQ. Rather, it measures the reason solving skills that have developed during a student’s educational career, even though they have not been explicitly taught. These general Cognitive Ability skills are not specific to any content area, but are skills that are used in all areas of a student’s academic experiences.

Cogat Test Scores

The CogAT is comprised of total 120 questions and used in various states of USA. During practice test you can solve variety types of question that might appear on the CogAT final exam. Because more than one answer may appear correct, children must exercise their reasoning capabilities and problem to select the correct answer. This CogAT format may be different from the formats of questions your child answers in school. The CogAT assesses reasoning and problem solving, thinking abilities in 3 areas such as verbal, non-verbal and quantitative and contains also some subtests. Because most of the questions on the CogAT exam are ones that your child must not have seen before in school, most children will not be ready without special preparation for the exam otherwise Cogat Test Scores will be poor.

Standard Cogat Test

There are mainly 3 versions of the CogAT are in use such as Form 5, 6 and 7. Most schools upgraded a number of years ago from Form 5 to Form 6. In July 2011, Riverside Publishing has released a new version of the CogAT Form 7. The CogAT Form 7 exams have replaced some of the test areas on the Form 6 exam. Overall changes to the CogAT exam are intended to make the exam fairer to English Language Learner students. One big change between the CogAT form 6 and 7 is the identification of levels. In Form 6, children attend either the Primary (K, 1 or 2) or the Multi-Level (3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 or 12). In Form 7, levels have been decided to correspond to the most likely age of the child taking the test.

In addition, there are also both spring and fall versions of the Cogat test are implemented. The fall version of the test is a little more difficult because children attended Cogat test later in the school year are expected to be able to face more difficult questions than those tested earlier in the school year. Cogat Test Prep

CogAT can be conducted in whole or in part, however, the most complete view of a student will be provided through administration of all 3 batteries. For the Primary Edition (Levels K-2), 2 subtests measure each reasoning abilities. The Multilevel Edition (Levels A-H) uses 3subtests to measure each reason solving abilities. A variety item format on every subtest it used to ensure that scores for each battery are not wrongly affected by performance on a particular item type. Requirement of Cogat Test Prep

The test levels can be differed as per various levels such as low, average and high ability classes. Some students in any group who are expected to score above the 90% may be selected as candidates for individualized testing with a level different from the level used for the majority of students. The Verbal Battery tests a student’s vocabulary, as well as his/her comprehension of ideas and verbal memory, and ability to discover word relationships. It is made up of three sub batteries such as Verbal Classification, Sentence Completion and Verbal Analogies. In Verbal classification, the student is given a list of 3 words that are alike in some way. The student is instructed to choose a word, from a selection of 5 words, which is very closely confusing. The student is to solve the two problems and determine if the answer is greater, less than, or equal to. In Number Series, the student is given a series of numbers and is instructed to decide which number should come next in the series. In Equation Building, the student is given numbers and signs. The student is instructed to combine the numbers and signs to get a solution that is an answer choice. These are related to pure mathematical practice.

In Nonverbal battery the students have to face geometrical questions. The tests need no reading.
